Behind the Story

Born in Singapore where I had my education and most of my growing-up years.

My dad migrated from Sri Lanka to Singapore where he met and married a beautiful Chinese lady and I was born! And then my brother came three years later.

My mum is mainland Chinese who lived in an era of civil war and the coming of Mao Zedong. She with her two sisters escaped finding refuge in Singapore in the 40s. They never saw their parents again.

My uncle walked for days under the cover of darkness to reach Macau. And then swam for hours missing sharks and gunboat patrols to reach Hong Kong. It nearly cost his life.

My mum started me in my first enterprise in Singapore, a shoe stand at a flea market when I was nine years old. I cut my teeth in business there.

My dad had two cut gems shops (precious gems like diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds, topazes). I worked in that shop weekends, dealing in gems at the age of twelve.

He had one shop at the Goodwood Park Hotel, one of Singapore’s heritage sites (where I worked most). The other, not too far away, near Tanglin Circus towards the end of Orchard Road in Singapore.

He pioneered a one-man business consultancy of sorts from home, mentoring clients in our small kitchen. My dad was a speech writer and a poet too. He was the original hustler, but he was also a gambler.

Hi, I'm Byrt Mallanyk, Chief Dreamer.

Migrating from Singapore to Australia forty-three years ago, as a person of dark complexion, to be with my wife was a paradigm shift, and another story - but a love story.

In reality, I am a musician by profession - contracted to Singapore Hilton where my band played six nights a week. While music runs deep in me - and I still play, I have ‘natural hands’ for how business works.
